Nausea and Vomiting
High levels of the pregnancy hormone beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) are responsible for nausea and vomiting. It is more severe in multiple pregnancies like twins or triplets due to the larger amounts of hormones secreted. In addition, the sphincter which connects the stomach to the food pipe is relaxed due to the hormone relaxin and allows reflux of the stomach contents, which are acidic in nature. This gives rise to heartburn. Sometimes Nausea and vomiting can be triggered by certain food or smells.
The solution– Avoid triggers like certain foods or smells, and eat frequent small meals- every 3 hours or so. Bland food with less oil and spices is preferred. Experiment to see what works for you. A lot of women find relief with ginger and lime. Even a change of environment – e.g. a stressful work or home environment – can be helpful. Get adequate rest and stay well hydrated. Distract yourself by reading a book or going for a walk. If all this does not help, you may need to take some medications prescribed by your doctor. Severe Nausea and vomiting can lead to weight loss and dehydration with dire consequences. So speak to your doctor sooner rather than later
Increased vaginal discharge
This is also due to an increase in the hormone levels during pregnancy. The discharge is usually clear white and odorless. But if it is associated with symptoms like itching or a foul smell, it is better to consult your doctor as you could have a vaginal infection. Pregnancy is a state of low immunity, and you can easily acquire all kinds of infections. So see your doctor to make sure you are not harboring an infection.
Passing Urine more frequently
This is because the growing uterus can exert pressure on your bladder. But again, a urinary tract infection needs to be ruled out. Certain bugs in your urine can increase your risk of premature delivery. Some organisms that can be asymptomatic can, in later pregnancy and during delivery – infect the baby and cause neonatal infection. It is for this reason that all women should have Blood and urine tests before 12 weeks of pregnancy.
In addition, the urinary frequency can be a sign of a Retroverted Uterus, and this would need to e checked out by your doctor.
Soreness and enlargement of the breasts and nipple pigmentation
This is because of the hormones that are secreted by the placenta during pregnancy. It usually starts early in pregnancy and the final maturation of the breast tissues actually occurs during pregnancy. They prepare the breasts for the production of milk and for breastfeeding. Wear a well-fitted bra, and use cold compresses to help ease the discomfort. Warm showers help some women. Rarely is pain medication required.
Feeling Lethargic and exhausted
It is perfectly normal to feel more tired and exhausted in pregnancy, as your body changes to adapt to pregnancy both physically and metabolically. The demand for oxygen increases so some women feel breathless, especially at night. Take deep breaths intermittently, and take an afternoon nap if needed.
Some women may suffer from Anemia which can also make them feel more tired and also breathless. Your Antenatal booking Blood would sort this issue, and your doctor would advise you on the correct medications/supplements needed.
