When the baby lies with its bottom pointing downwards in the mum’s Uterus, it is said to be in Breech Presentation. Such a baby is at risk during vaginal delivery as it can get suffocated during the process, and also suffer a lack of oxygen and permanent brain damage.
Because of this risk, the topic has received a lot of attention and research.
I have been involved with a Major International Randomized Control Trial on Breech delivery, where over 80 countries have participated. In order to avoid complications of vaginal breech delivery, the baby can be turned while still in the Mums womb. This would avoid cesarean delivery.
The Trial results showed that turning the baby in the uterus is safe, provided there are no contraindications. The procedure is called External Cephalic Version.
